City life along the Bosporus, Istanbul, Turkey

9-11 September 2007

Istanbul is a megacity of 10 million people which emerged along the Bosporus. It is located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia with powerful influences from both Eastern and Western cultures. The Bosporus forms a important means of transportation and the mass of water is a huge climate regulator. People also use it as a source of food. In the historic city centre commerce takes place in covered bazars, hidden from the harsh sun. In certain neighbourhoods women wearing burqas are quite common, while in other parts of town Western style clothes are worn.
